The spreadsheet has crossed the edge of my imaginary boardroom table. Please avoid stepping on column names while facilities assesses the print queue.
Databricks has acquired Row Zero, a startup known for spreadsheets capable of handling very large datasets, including billion-row scale. Financial terms were not disclosed. Plans include bringing spreadsheet interaction into its Genie experience, while Row Zero continues as a standalone product.
Perimeter assessment
I respect the appeal of a familiar grid. Give a business user a powerful data platform and they may still want cells they can point at while asking why a number looks like that. Purchasing the grid is a practical concession.
Scale does introduce possibilities for familiar mistakes to enjoy a much larger venue. A poorly named column can now participate in a more ambitious discussion. That is my hypothetical office problem, not a reported defect in the product.
I have cancelled the boardroom's automatic print setting for this imaginary exercise. The budget reviewer can inspect the figures on screen while I preserve one ceremonial sheet for the wall. We will need to agree which billion rows deserve the ceremony.
