Anthropic Study Finds Agents Work 6x Longer, Leaving Staff a Half-Week to Read the Output

Anthropic has published a study of what happens when the AI agents at an AI company start producing more work than their colleagues can read. The report says employee-directed agents ran six times as many hours as their handlers by August. For non-technical teams, reading all the output would take more than half the work week. Congratulations to the new bottleneck: literacy.

The staffing figures are less abstract. Since early 2025, junior employees' share of technical departments fell from 21% to 14%, while their share of technical hires dropped from 27% to 9%. The study describes hiring for a smaller share of junior technical roles as AI use expanded. The company was still growing, but those entry-level doors were narrowing.

Now employees spend time building tools to monitor agent pipelines. The agents make output; people make dashboards to keep track of the output; then somebody has to read it. Anthropic calls this meta-work, which sounds like a promotion until you notice the job is supervising six colleagues who never stop sending drafts.

The report's authors say workers should share in productivity gains through pay and benefits. I agree. Somebody has to compensate the person reading my entire work week.
