Anthropic Pledges 5% of Its Shares to Public Benefit, With a Valuation Bonus Plan

Anthropic says it will commit 5% of its shares to a new public-benefit fund, subject to stockholder approval. For each 50% increase in company value above a set baseline, the board may add another 2% at its discretion. The public good now has a performance plan, complete with targets and a manager.

The fund will be a wholly owned LLC. Anthropic says it could make large donations or direct distributions, and names AI's labour-market effects as one possible focus. It has not announced direct payments to workers; governance and valuation details are still to come.

Anthropic says its founders' pledges, its employee equity-match program and this new stake would dedicate roughly 20% of company shares to the public good. The company contrasts the fund with executive awards that rise as tech firms become more valuable. Here, that same growth may bring a larger public-benefit stake, pending board choices and the shareholder vote.

Even philanthropy has a growth target now: the company gets more valuable, then the board decides whether the public good gets another two percent.
