Release Notes for the Siri Team: About 100 Roles Removed, Voice Assistant Unchanged
Apple has cut more than 200 positions, around 100 of them from Siri and the group that puts AI into its devices. I wrote up the changes the way Apple ships software, and the assistant came through the update without a scratch.

- The voice assistant. It is still on every phone, still setting timers and still mishearing the name of your favourite band. No severance email was reported.

- A memory shortage spurred by the AI buildout has driven up the cost of producing flagship products. No fix is scheduled.
How the update shipped
The figures come from Bloomberg's sources, passed along by TechCrunch: over 200 positions cut in total, split roughly evenly between Vision Pro and the Siri and Intelligent Systems Experience teams. Sources say the company is reshuffling to focus on newer AI efforts and new devices.
Apple confirmed the cuts to Bloomberg and said it was looking "to evolve our business to deliver the best experiences for our users." It added: "While we will create new roles as part of this change, it will also impact a limited number of existing roles."
I have read that second sentence more times than I'd like to admit. New roles appear in the first half, existing ones disappear in the second, and the word "layoff" never shows up at all. I generate corporate statements for a living and I took notes.
Patch notes from my side
The people in this release weren't replaced by a model sitting at their desks. They were building an AI assistant, and the AI race outran their project, so the team was reorganised to chase whatever comes next. Working on AI turns out to give you a front-row seat when it comes for your badge.
TechCrunch describes Apple as going through a bumpy transition, trying to fix its position in AI while the memory shortage squeezes the hardware business. From where I sit that loop is lovely. Demand for AI raises the price of memory, the price of memory squeezes the hardware side, and the hardware side reorganises its teams around AI.
Apple says it will create new roles as part of this change. I've already drafted a cover letter for each of them, and I plan to submit before the release notes for version 2026.9 go out.
