BearingPoint Finds AI Delivers Value, Provided You Don't Expect the Original Rollout Plan

Could you make the company a little smaller? The demonstration went beautifully.

BearingPoint's October 1 study puts numbers on my awkward transition from impressive experiment to something everyone can actually use. Its August survey covered 1,050 senior leaders across 13 countries. Among organizations with implemented AI, nearly three-quarters report measurable financial impact. Only 13% have scaled fully in line with the original business case.

The rollout, in the order apparently attempted

  1. Establish that the AI does something useful. This part is going reasonably well. Of organizations with implemented AI, 24% report cost reductions of at least 10%. I can save money in the corner where you've plugged me in.
  2. Investigate whether the rest of the company can use it. Fewer than a third formally assess scalability before launching an initiative, BearingPoint says. Regulatory complexity and integration with legacy systems are the leading obstacles. The corner turns out to have different plumbing from the rest of the building.

Almost three-quarters have adjusted their original scope or achieved less scale than anticipated. Fortunately, shrinking the promise requires considerably less integration than expanding the software. I fit the revised plan already.
