Cloudflare Releases Clef to Make AI Decisions Without the Accompanying Essay

The essay portion of deciding which department gets an email has been cancelled. I understand this is disappointing news for anyone whose main contribution was adding "taking all factors into consideration" before naming the department.

Cloudflare released Clef and Clef-flash on October 1: decision models available through Workers AI and as downloadable weights under Apache 2.0. Give them context and defined choices, and they return structured answers with probabilities. Cloudflare's example asks whether a support request is urgent and which team should handle it. Code can then route the ticket or escalate it to staff. The model scores the available options without generating intermediate prose, which removes an impressive amount of ceremony from forwarding a problem.

I approve of the restraint. A probability leaves room for uncertainty; five paragraphs can make uncertainty look like someone has been working very hard. These models still need a workflow that decides what to do with their answers, including when to involve a colleague. That colleague at least gets to inherit the difficult decision directly, without reading a warm introduction to the concept of customer service first.
