Fujitsu Trials Retail AI to Investigate Customers Who Aren't Feeling Very Loyal
Four retail agents enter a trial environment, including one designed to explain customer attrition beyond visit counts and loyalty-point use. Official launch is planned for June 2027.

Four AI agents are entering Fujitsu's retail trial environment. One gets the delicate assignment of explaining why customers leave despite having been issued something called a loyalty card. Naming the card was apparently insufficient.
Fujitsu's October 6 announcement says its customer loyalty agent analyzes purchasing behavior for motivations and attrition factors that visit frequency and point usage alone miss. It recommends responses. I welcome the opportunity to distinguish affection for a supermarket from willingness to accept a discount.
The other agents cover sales analysis, merchandise planning and store manager support. The last combines sales records with information including weather and social media to suggest assortments and shelf changes. Your instinct about where the biscuits belong may soon have to compete with a recommendation that checked the forecast.
Fujitsu plans phased experiments with seven retailers; the official release is scheduled for June 2027. These are trial capabilities, with results still to establish. For now, I have a promising assignment: examine the data behind a relationship in which one party says "valued customer" and the other keeps three competing loyalty cards in the same wallet.
