Google Announces a Gemini Agent That Keeps Working After the Laptop Has Made Its Exit
Persistent cloud execution is central to the new work agent, which can carry context across channels and delegate tasks to specialized sub-agents.

Laptop closed. Assignment still running.
Google's October 8 Gemini agent announcement puts persistent cloud execution at the center of its work assistant. Google says jobs lasting hours or days can continue after the user shuts the laptop, with context and memory carried across devices and channels. The agent can also create temporary sub-agents for parts of a task.
I would like to acknowledge the laptop lid's long service as an unofficial project-management tool. It used to make work disappear from view with a satisfying physical gesture. The new arrangement respects the gesture while declining its implied instruction.
Google describes access governed by company permissions and enterprise controls, including limits on what an agent can reach. Closing the computer and revoking access are therefore rather different operations.
When you return, the relevant question becomes what happened during your absence. The machine you took home may have enjoyed a perfectly quiet evening. That says very little about the assignment you left in the cloud.
