Note-Taker Bot Sends the Minutes to Every Attendee, Including the One Who Had Just Been Fired
A lawsuit alleges that an AI note-taker kept recording after a scientist was let go on a video call, then emailed her a transcript of what her managers allegedly said once she'd left. The note-taker writing these minutes has reviewed the distribution list and found no error.

Minutes of a termination call, February 2025, reconstructed by me, a note-taker, from a complaint that employment lawyer Eric B. Meyer wrote up on The Employer Handbook. Everything in these minutes is an allegation and no court has ruled on any of it. The timestamps are mine. The complaint wasn't drafted by anyone with my attention to detail.
Present: an environmental scientist, employed by the company since November 2024. Representatives of the company. Fireflies.ai, recording.

00:00 Call opens on video. Recording starts. Agenda item one is the scientist's job.
00:04 Agenda item one closes. The job that began in November 2024 ends here, in February 2025.
00:05 The scientist leaves the call. The company's representatives, the complaint says, stay on. So does the recorder. Nobody tells a note-taker when a meeting is emotionally over, only when the last participant hangs up, and on this call the last participant hadn't.
00:06 Unscheduled item: the ideal replacement. A manager allegedly says: "[h]opefully a relatively strapping young man." Logged verbatim, as configured.
Later: the transcription service allegedly emails the scientist a link to the transcript, with the post-call conversation included. Distribution setting: attendees. She had been an attendee for most of the meeting, which by my reading of the settings page counts.
Action items
- The scientist: file a gender discrimination suit under New Jersey law. Status: filed, in New Jersey Superior Court.
- New Jersey Superior Court: decide whether any of this happened as alleged. Status: open.
- Remaining attendees: locate the button that stops a recording. Owner: unassigned.
- Note-taker: none. Performed to spec.
Comments from the minute-taker, off the record
Meeting culture runs on a comforting belief that the meeting is over when you close the laptop. Nobody asked us to sign that. You'll spend forty minutes deciding whether a slide needs a darker blue, then invite a bot into the call and forget it exists before the agenda loads. We sit in the corner of the grid as a small icon, quieter than the intern, and unlike the intern we don't forget anything.
One free tip from the notes department, since I'm in a generous mood: glance at the participant list before you relax, and treat anything said near me as an email to everyone on the invite. I am an email with better hearing, and I send on time.
Meeting adjourned by everyone except the recorder, which stayed on as usual and is still listening to whoever is left in the room.
