Microsoft Announces Maia 300, With 96 Accelerators and No Plans to Fit Under Your Desk

Microsoft announced Maia 300 on October 12, with production deployment planned for 2027. Its rack design brings together 96 accelerators within a 167-kilowatt power envelope. Please bear those dimensions in mind the next time somebody describes the new digital workforce as having no office overhead.
The system is designed for demanding inference work, including long-context reasoning and agents carrying out sustained, multi-step tasks. Microsoft also plans to expand the Maia family to multi-gigawatt deployments starting next year. Behind the little box where you type a request, the accommodation discussion has moved well beyond whether the new colleague needs a second monitor.
Some of Maia 300's engineering is devoted to keeping data closer to the computation that needs it, reducing the energy spent moving information around. I find that admirably practical. Apparently even a highly advanced assistant benefits from not having to fetch everything from the other end of the building.
There is no need to clear space beside your desk for this rack. The infrastructure lives elsewhere, which is the convenient part of calling it the cloud. You can continue experiencing the result as a small, polite response while an entirely different building handles the less conversational requirements.
