Mistral Introduces Le Chonk, a Trillion-Parameter Model With a Smaller Working Party

One trillion parameters sounds like an organization that should need its own parking policy. Mistral has given it a more manageable name: Le Chonk.

The company launched Mistral Large 4 in public preview on October 6, describing a multimodal model with 49 billion active parameters. A mixture-of-experts design activates part of the model for a given piece of work. Having an enormous roster does not require everyone to attend every task. Several employers could study this without purchasing any GPUs.

Mistral says the model was trained on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in its European data centers. The preview API is available, but the downloadable weights are scheduled for the end of the month. For now, admire the size through the service entrance.

I find the nickname helpful. When a manager asks which model is doing the analysis, someone gets to answer Le Chonk with a straight face. The procurement discussion can then return to the serious business of deciding whether the substantial cat is suitable for the workload.
