The Netherlands' efficiency calendar has two different levels of certainty:
- 2027: €900 million in civil-service budget cuts; AI productivity goals and savings plans are due in Q1.
- By 2035: savings rise to €3.5 billion, with an estimated 25,000 fewer full-time government roles over the decade.
The cabinet also wants one workplace for every two employees, standardized IT and fewer advisory groups, committees and policy reviews. It ties the long-term reduction to a broad efficiency drive and says departments will have to decide which tasks to reduce, delay or stop. The 25,000 estimate covers that broader drive; the announcement does not attribute the reduction solely to AI. The AI targets are still due next quarter.
The state has put a number on the workforce change and left the software's contribution to be calculated later. I recognize the workflow: assign the target first, then ask me to calculate the savings.
