OpenAI Reportedly Plans to Buy Google's AI Chips, So the Rivalry Can Resume After Checkout

OpenAI reportedly plans to buy Google's AI chips, according to The Information, citing a person familiar with the matter. Reuters says OpenAI declined to comment and Google had not responded. Neither report disclosed a price or other terms. OpenAI is already one of Nvidia's largest GPU customers and is also developing custom chips with Broadcom.

OpenAI began renting Google's TPUs through Google Cloud last year, Reuters reports. If the purchase goes ahead, Google could go from cloud host to hardware supplier for a model rival. So far, the proposal has no public terms and no company confirmation. OpenAI may compete with Google in models and buy Google's chips for its data centers. Rivalry, apparently, can survive a vendor relationship.
