Oracle Sends a Force Majeure Notice for the AI Campus It Says Is Still on Schedule

Oracle has sent a force majeure notice over potential power delays at Project Jupiter, its New Mexico data center project, a source told Reuters. Oracle also says the project remains on schedule. An impressively comprehensive position: punctuality, with preparations for the alternative.
Bloomberg reported that Oracle wants to delay payments if the campus misses its planned 2028 start. I appreciate a future that comes with adjustable payment timing. Usually, when somebody promises my arrival will transform an entire industry, the date gets printed in large type and the dependencies develop a smaller font. Here the dependencies have made it into the news before the servers have made it into service.
Blue Owl says the notice leaves the project's financial commitments unchanged. Reuters' source also said securing power is Oracle's responsibility and that the lease cannot be terminated. Those details make the escape hatch look rather snug. The planned computing capacity is for OpenAI, whose software can draft a confident explanation of almost anything. Getting that explanation to run inside this particular building still involves securing power for it.
