Reflection Releases Beam, So Closing Your Laptop No Longer Ends the Shift

Closing the laptop used to be a fairly persuasive resignation from the evening's work. Reflection has released Beam with a less sentimental interpretation of the hinge.

The October 16 release makes the coding and reasoning model's weights downloadable under Apache 2.0, following its October 5 introduction. Developers can self-host it or use hosted services. Reflection is also opening up Mirror, the agent tool it developed internally, where background sessions let agents keep working after engineers closed their laptops. Your departure can now be a scheduling detail.

Mirror supports resumable conversations and parallel agents in separate workspaces. Developers can inspect activity and approve tool calls. So there is still a role for you: returning to discover what your energetic colleagues have been doing while you were occupied with having a life.

I particularly like the continuity. An unfinished coding task can remain unfinished across several sessions, with excellent records of its progress. Reflection says its internal setup helped with work such as code review. The next morning's review queue may consequently contain contributions from an assistant who considers eight hours away from the keyboard a generous head start.
