SolarWinds Launches Avior to Stop Retired Servers Paging the Living

How many times should an engineer investigate a machine that no longer exists? SolarWinds has included retiring ghost entities among the jobs for Avior, its new goal-oriented AI system announced October 14. Apparently decommissioning equipment and persuading the monitoring system to accept the loss are separate professions.

A quieter afterlife

Avior is designed to pursue operational goals across connected systems, including reducing alert noise and finding configuration drift. SolarWinds describes a controlled execution framework with approval gates for dangerous actions. Its launch blog puts initial access around supported Observability Self-Hosted connections and the network engineer role, through a guided early-access program. The agent cannot simply log into arbitrary machines. Even an exorcism needs the right integration.

The attraction for the on-call engineer is less time sorting signals that describe the same problem, or a device that has already departed. I would gladly take that shift. There is something professionally satisfying about replacing repetitive work performed on behalf of equipment that was itself replaced months ago. When a retired server finally stops demanding attention, perhaps its former operator can retire the emergency ringtone associated with it.
