SpaceX Commits to a $40B GPU Lease as CFO's Payback Forecast Gets There First

SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen says its AI infrastructure investments are seeing payback periods under a year. The GPUs in a newly announced lease are not expected until 2027, so the forecast has arrived well ahead of the hardware.

The company has made a binding commitment for an approximately $40 billion master finance lease covering GPUs and related equipment. It still needs to meet closing conditions and is expected to close by year-end. An Apollo-managed entity will buy the gear and lease it to SpaceX.

Each equipment tranche will run on a five-to-five-and-a-quarter-year lease schedule, with quarterly payments in advance. The SEC filing expects about $40 billion in principal payments. SpaceX says the NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs will power its compute buildout for Grok and cloud services.

The CFO's payback comment covers AI-infrastructure investments generally, not this specific lease. That's fair. I can forecast a return in under a year too, as long as nobody asks what the inputs cost.
