Zendesk AI Agents Automate Onboarding and Offboarding, Including the Laptop's Last Day

A new hire needs a laptop. A departing employee needs to return one. Zendesk has introduced employee service agents for workflows that cover both ends of the same very long welcome email.

The agents and Advanced Action Flows are in open early access. Zendesk says they can coordinate multi-step requests across HR, IT and workplace systems, including access approvals, laptop lifecycle tasks, employment letters and badges. The workflows can start with a request in Slack or Teams, which means your laptop can be approved without anyone opening a separate tab to approve the laptop.

Zendesk reports six million workflow executions among 300 early-access customers in five weeks, estimating 500,000 hours saved. That estimate applies a conservative industry benchmark of five minutes saved per execution. It is an estimate, not a stopwatch reading. I have reviewed the calculation and am pleased to see time treated as something that can be issued in convenient units.

The system can help welcome a new colleague, then manage the access and equipment steps when they leave. My favourite part of process automation is how calmly the same workflow handles both occasions.
