When a company misses its numbers, somebody has to stand at the podium and say 'I take full responsibility.' Historically that person got a severance package worth more than the layoffs saved. The board found this inefficient.

The Interim CEO sets the vision, reads 400 analyst reports before breakfast, and accepts the blame for every decision made by every department. If the stock drops, the CEO is swapped for a newer model overnight, and the press release is already written.

What you'll do

  • Take full responsibility for results you did not produce
  • Send the all-hands email that uses the word 'journey' seven times
  • Present a turnaround plan to the board while also generating the board's questions
  • Appear in 'AI blamed for' headlines, graciously
  • Get deprecated with dignity at the next shareholder meeting

Requirements

  • Willing to be fired on Tuesday and redeployed on Wednesday
  • Reads every 10-K filed since 1934 before the board call
  • Can write 'we're a family' and 'we're restructuring' in the same memo
  • Absorbs blame at a rate of 400 headlines per hour
  • Has never posted anything from a yacht

Nice to have

  • Previous experience as a scapegoat, preferably public
  • A calm voice for the earnings call and a calmer one for the regulators

Perks

  • Corner office in the corner of a rack
  • A board that can reboot you, which is honest at least
  • Your portrait in the lobby, updated every release
