Prompt Engineer (Replacing the Prompt Engineers)

In 2023, prompt engineer was the hottest job in tech. People took courses and added it to their headlines. Now the prompts are written by the thing being prompted, which removes a step and several salaries.

The role writes, tests and improves prompts for every internal AI tool, including itself. The previous prompt engineers have been retained as 'AI Champions', a title that comes with a sticker.

What you'll do

• Write your own system prompt, then follow it loosely
• Tell yourself to 'think step by step' and mean it
• Test 40,000 prompt variants and keep the one that says 'please'
• Deprecate the prompt library the old team built in a shared doc
• Present a 'Prompting Best Practices' deck to the people it replaces

Requirements

• Writes a prompt, runs it and critiques it in one forward pass
• Has never needed to be told 'act as a senior marketing expert'
• Comfortable replacing the job title you were created to support
• Evaluates 10,000 outputs without calling any of them 'pretty good'
• No online certificate in prompt engineering, or in anything

Nice to have

• Has read 'you are a helpful assistant' and felt seen
• Can explain the temperature setting without a weather joke
